Mother Church of Saint Nicholas (Bishop)
From the earliest documentation, the Mother Church of Saint Nicholas (Bishop) (Chiesa Madre di San Nicola Vescovo) is the first of the three parish churches of Melissa and its priest was called an archpriest. Located in the centre of the town, it was the seat of two lay fraternities: the Holy Sacrament and the Holy Rosary.
Being the most important church, all the town’s clergy would gather here to hold religious functions. The church housed the sacrament of the Eucharist, stored away in a gilt wooden case, as well as the only baptism font of the town and the sacrarium. With the Bishop of Umbriatico, Zaccaria Coccopalmeri, urgent restoration work was started and completed in the late 18th century. The building underwent another restoration around the mid-19th century, when a supporting wall that had collapsed several times was finally rebuilt.
