ARAGONESE TOWER
The construction of the Aragonese Tower may be dated to the 16th century, at a time when the Spanish Kingdom of Aragon ruled southern Italy. Other watchtowers were also built in this period in order to defend the kingdom’s people from the Venetians and from pirates.
The Tower is also known as “Torre Merlata” or Torrazzo and clearly differs from the other Spanish watchtowers built in the 16th and 17th century. The Tower, of a circular structure, has three overall levels: an inner courtyard with small rooms for stores; the living quarters; the crowning: Over the years, the Tower has been the property of the princes of Strongoli, of the Campitelli family and of the Berlingeri family. Today, it is a municipal property and is seat of the Local Action Group (GAL) of the Upper Crotone Marquisate. On display there are utensils, tools and typical products of local cuisine and of the Calabrian tradition.
