MONUMENT TO THE FALLEN OF FRAGALÀ
In 1979 Ernesto Treccani, a Milanese artist and the son of the founder of the famous encyclopedia of the same name, donated the Monument to the Fallen of Fragalà to the townsfolk of Melissa on the occasion of the anniversary of the massacre of the peasant farmers of Fragalà in 1949.
The ceremony also saw the participation of the Speaker of the Parliamentary House of Deputies, Nilde Iotti, and political authorities of Calabria. The peasant’s rebellion left three dead and many seriously injured in clashes with the police. The tragic event reverberated greatly in Italy and abroad. Treccani immediately sympathized with the farmers and already in November of the same year went to Melissa to cater, in person, to the problems of the local people. The tragic event also inspired some of his works, collected in the series “From Melissa to Valenza”. His thoughtfulness was reciprocated by the people of Melissa, who elected Treccani as a councilor in the municipal government of Melissa.
