RESEARCH CENTRE OF THE PEASANT STRUGGLES
The Research Centre of the Melissa Peasant Struggles was created to facilitate the in-depth study of the history of the peasant and farm laborer movement, and of the struggles for claiming the land. The museum contains the photographic exhibition “Melissa 1949-1979 – thirty years of photographic surveys on the condition and culture of the lower classes”.
The exhibition was set up by the Chair of the History of Popular Traditions, of the University of Messina, and offers various perspectives on the daily life, customs and habits of the Melissa peasant farmers. Many of the photographs were taken by the famous painter Ernesto Treccani, who used them as notes for his artistic research. The artist established a strong bond with Melissa and it inspired his work for a long time.
The Centre also organizes conferences and temporary exhibitions, and contains studies and materials of great documentary value.
