CHURCH OF SAINT MARY OF THE AUDIENCE
A little after the mid-15th century, the new prince of Strongoli, Domenico Pignatelli, who took over the fief of Melissa after the death of Count Francesco Campitelli, built the Church of Saint Mary of the Audience, also coarsely known as “ab Audentia”.
A hospice and premises for the Friar Minors were also built, attached to the church. At the end of the 16th century the church was rich in holy ornaments and furnishings. The church stood outside the walls but not too far from the people’s homes and soon became a destination of great devotion for people from all over the diocese of Umbriatico and of the province, since the word spread that it had the power to make miracles. To this day, above the door is the coat of arms of the Pignatelli family (three pots under a three-pronged rake), who maintained their right of patronage over the church for a long time.
