ROCKY CAVES
The Melissa area features a group of rocky caves, some incorporated into the town itself and others still well visible in the countryside.
The cave system develops along the valley floor at the foot of the hill whose slopes contain the cave dwellings: square, single-chamber units of various sizes. In some cases the entrances are closed off with stone and malt, while the ceilings are either flat or sloping. Some studies have found that the type of rocky habitat in the Melissa area was typically composed of a small number of dwellings on the same level.
